How To Avoid 3 of the Most Common Affiliate Marketing Mistakes

PifallsAffiliate marketing is one of the most effective and powerful ways of making money online. Affiliate programs give you the opportunity to make a living with the Internet.  Since affiliate marketing programs are easy to join, to implement and to make commissions on a regular basis, more and more people want to start in this business.

However, like all businesses, there are pitfalls to watch out for.   Avoiding some of the most common mistakes will help to keep your profits booming rather than slipping away.

Mistake number 1: Choosing the wrong program

Many people want to make money online as fast as possible. In their rush to do this they tend to choose a ‘bandwagon product’. This is the type of product is considered “hot”. They choose the “in demand” product without actually considering if the product is right for them. So, instead of jumping on the bandwagon, it makes more sense to choose a product in which you are truly interested in. It must appeal to you and preferably be about something you know about.   Research the product to understand if it is in demand. Promoting a product you are more passionate about is easier than promoting one for the sake of the earnings only.

Mistake number 2: Joining too many affiliate programs.

Since affiliate programs are really easy to join, you might be tempted to join multiple programs in an attempt to maximize your earnings.  This

might be a way to generate income from multiple sources, but by doing this and attempting to promote them all at the same time will prevent you from focusing on each one of them.

The result? The maximum potential of your affiliate program is not realized and the income generated will not be as big as you were hoping for. The best way to get results is by joining just one program that pays at least 40% commission. Give this your best effort by promoting your products enthusiastically. As soon as you see the product is making a respectable profit, you should look at other products and focus on each one of them in turn.

Mistake number 3: Not buying the product or using the service yourself.

As an affiliate your main purpose is to effectively promote a product or service and to find customers. For you to achieve this, you must be able to relay to the customers the value and benefit of each product or service. It is therefore difficult for you to do this when you yourself have not tried these things out. Thus, you will fail to promote them as well and therefore they will be unlikely be persuaded to buy.

Always try the product or service personally first before you sign up as an affiliate to see if it is really delivering what it promises. You will then be able to describe the benefits or possible issues first hand.. Your customers should then be able to feel they trust your opinions and hopefully try or buy the products themselves.

Avoid these three pitfalls and you will hopefully be promoting a portfolio of products as an affiliate successfully.  Good luck!

How To Choose the Right Affiliate Program

PT_Handshake ClaspedOne of the biggest issues faced by affiliate marketers is trying to choose the right programs. There are so many products and services available to promote you can spend more time picking one than promoting it!  However, I hope to make your choice a little easier after you have read this article.

You should start by making a list of things you know about.  This might be related to your current or previous jobs, but more likely to do with the things you do in your spare time – gaming, sports, or other hobbies and pastimes.  It’s always good to work in an area you are familiar with.  It’s even better to promote some of the products you already own if they have an affiliate program. You can relate to it so much better and relay your enthusiasm for the subject with your potential customer. Start by browsing or searching affiliate programs on websites like JV Zoo, Clickbank or Amazon.

Make a short list of products you think you would like to promote, and start asking questions.

Who is the Retailer?

Find out whom you are doing business with to know if it is really a solid company. Know the products they are selling and the average amount they are achieving. The more you know about the retailer offering you the affiliate program, the easier it will be for you to know if that program is really for you and your site.

Upfront Costs

Will it cost you anything to join? Fortunately, most affiliate programs don’t cost anything but if they do, have a think about if it’s going to be worth it.

Sales Ratio

What is the hit per sale ratio? This is the average number of hits to a banner or text link it takes to generate a sale based on all affiliate statistics. This is extremely important because this will tell you how much traffic you must generate before you can earn a commission from the sale.

How much commission is paid? Most programs pay 20% – 80% and some even pay 100% at the front end.  If you find a program that also pays for impressions, the amount paid tends not to be much at all.

How often will I get paid?

When do they issue the commission checks? Every program is different. Some will pay you once a month, every quarter, etc. Select the one that is suited to your payment time choice. Many affiliate programs are setting a minimum earned commission amount that an affiliate must meet or exceed in order for their checks to be issued.

How are referrals tracked and how long do they remain in the system? You need to be confident on the program enough to track those people you refer from your site. This is the only way that you can credit for a sale. The period of time that those people stay in the system is also important. This is because some visitors do not buy initially but may want to return later to make the purchase. Know if you will still get credit for the sale if it is done some months from a certain day.

What stats are available? Your choice of affiliate program should be capable of offering detailed stats. They should be available online anytime you decide to check them out. Constantly checking your individual stats is important to know how many impressions, hits and sales have been generated from your site. Impressions are the number of times the banner or text link was viewed by a visitor of your site.

These are just a few questions you need answering before you sign up to the affiliate program.  Find the right ones for you and good luck promoting them.

THREE Top Tips To Survive as an Affiliate Marketer

Affiliate marketers spend much of their time searching for the best niches and products to give them the biggest paychecks. As you know, there is no magic formula.  The way to successful affiliate marketing is by following established marketing practices that have stood the test of time with years of hard work and dedication.  These top three marketing tips will enable you to increase sales and ensure you survive affiliate marketing online.

What are these three tactics?

1. Use unique web pages to promote each product you are marketing.

WebpageDo not lump all of it together just to save some money on web hosting. It is best to have individual sites focused on each and every product and nothing more.  Always try to include product reviews so your prospects will have a first hand opinion of both what the product can do and how good it is. Also include testimonials from customers who have already bought the product. Be sure that these customers are willing to allow you to use their names and photos on the site of the specific product you are marketing.

You could also write articles highlighting the features of the product and include them on the website as an additional page. Make the pages attractive, compelling and include calls to action. Your headline should attract your visitors to continue reading and hopefully to purchase the product. Highlight the product’s most important (and unique) selling points so your reader understands exactly what you are selling.

2. Offer a free reports to your visitors.

ebook_cover_3D_largeIf possible position a call to action for a free report at the very top of your page so it simply cannot be missed. Create autoresponder messages that will be emailed to those who input their personal information into your sign up box. You only need to ask for their first name and email address – nothing else.  According to research, a sale is closed usually on the seventh contact with a prospect.

Only two things can possibly happen with the web page – a successful sale or the prospect leaving the page never to return again. By sending them a useful free report along with loads of valuable related information to their inboxes every day, you will remind them of the product they originally considered on your website. Be sure that the content is directed toward specific reasons to buy the product. Do not make it sound like a sales pitch.

Focus on the important points like how this product would make their life easier. Include compelling subject lines in the email to make them open and read. Try to avoid using the word “free” because there are still spam filters which will move your email straight into the junk or spam folder.  Convince those who signed up for your free reports that they will be missing something big if they do not buy this product or service.

3. Targeted traffic is the key to a sale

website_traffic_tinyYour visitors must be the people who are most likely to buy the product.  In order to find and attract the right traffic you can write articles for publication in e-zines and e-reports.  Try to write a minimum of 2 articles per week at least 300-600 words in length. By continuously writing and maintaining these articles you can generate as many as 100 targeted readers to your site every day.  Remember that only 1 out of 100 visitors are likely to buy the product or services. If you can generate as many as 1,000 targeted hits every day, you will potentially make 10 sales on average.

By following these 3 simple tactics you can be sure to attract the right type of customer who will go ahead and buy the product you are promoting as an affiliate and help you to start building your list.  You can then use your autoresponder to send both visitors and customers regular emails containing really great information with the aim to making even more sales of other great products.

Get Response Disaster …. averted !!!

Yesterday was the start of my very first solo ad campaign which was due to deliver 500 clicks.  After lots of tweaking with the solo ad provider my squeeze page was sorted, email sequence written, and everything was ready to go.

I received a message from the provider and was pleased to see 20 people sign up to my list from the initial 100 clicks, but on checking Get Response I noticed no emails were being sent out.
GR-LPSettingsAfter a brief chat with the great support guys from GR they pointed me towards a rather important check box on the Landing Page Settings … which wasn’t ticked!

This rather important setting ‘Add into the cycle on day:’ was surprisingly not enabled by default.  This particular setting determined whether or not an email was sent on opt-in. So, I ticked it and selected the Day0 email.

The next step was to review the Email Analytics to make sure the Day0 email actually was sent to the new subscribers.  This involved moving everyone to the Day0 list.  Disaster averted fortunately and first sale made.  Result !!

Affiliate Marketing Basics

Affiliate Marketing can be really difficult if you don’t approach it in the right way.  This short post will hopefully help you understand the basic steps in finding the best product to promote.

First of all you need to know the target market really well, then find the biggest pain points.  More importantly, solutions to these pain points must not be easily found on the internet.

If you’re close to your target market, you will already know where the pain points are and therefore, you are in a much better position to help find a solution.

Selecting the right product to promote is the next step so choose carefully and make sure it adds value in helping your customers’ problems.  If you can’t find something suitable you may be better placed to create your own product, but that’s not necessarily a task for the beginner.

You now need to promote your selected product.  There are so many different ways to promote and get visitors to see your offer but it is always best to study one or maybe two traffic strategies to begin with.

Go to where your customers are hanging out.  If this is a market you really know then you probably know which websites and forums they can be found.  Forums are great because people spend quite a lot of time complaining about things and airing their problems, so it’s ideal that you can come along and offer them a solution.

Before you redirect them to your offer make sure you collect their details along the way so you can get in touch with them again.  Create a simple ‘squeeze’ page where all they have to do is fill in at least their email address, they click a button which sends them to your offer.

You are now starting to build a list of subscribers who are interested in the products you are promoting, so you can send them emails again and again knowing you’re more likely to make a sale.

Hope this very quick overview of affiliate marketing provides you with a better idea of where to start so please leave me a comment or share if you think it has been useful.
